March 28th Thursday/Friday Update

Dear Parent(s)/Guardian(s):

It was a short but fun week at Jacob Beam! I wish everyone a wonderful long weekend, and Happy Easter to those that celebrate! A reminder that school resumes on Tuesday, April 2nd. Also a reminder that Monday, April 8th is a PD day and there is no school for students on this day. Finally, please ensure that when you are picking up and dropping off students, you do not use the accessible parking spots unless you have a permit to do so.

Cookie Tuesday delayed this week to Wednesday

Due to the holiday weekend, the cookie order will not be delivered until Wednesday. We apologize for this change, but for this upcoming week, it will be on Wednesday instead of Tuesday. Thanks for your understanding.

World Autism Day Tuesday, April 2nd

April is World Autism Month, an annual opportunity for a dedicated conversation about autism spectrum disorder. Autism touches more than 70 million people globally. Approximately 1 in 50 children and youth are diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder in Canada and this number continues to grow.

In 2008, The United Nations General Assembly unanimously declared April 2nd is World Autism Awareness Day — many countries around the world light up their landmarks blue to help increase understanding and acceptance of people with Autism. In 2012, the Canadian Parliament passed the World Autism Awareness Day Act recognizing April 2nd as World Autism Awareness Day.

We would love for our students to wear BLUE to show support for their classmates who have Autism.

School Council Fundraiser - Cosmic Plants Orchids

Jacob Beam School Council is having a fundraiser selling orchids that will be available for pick up on April 30th at the Spring Arts Night. Please go to School Cash Online to order. Money raised from this fundraiser will go directly to the purchase of audio-visual equipment that will be used at our upcoming Spring Arts Night and the Beam Team Dance-a-Thon, as well as day-to-day in gym class. Please see the attached flier for more information.

Lockdown Practice & Fire Evacuation Drills

All schools within the DSBN practice lockdown procedures as part of the school’s emergency preparedness. The simulation will give students and staff an opportunity to implement our School and Board Emergency Response Plan to ensure the safety of all students and staff, should an emergency lockdown situation occur.

This is to inform you that Jacob Beam Public School will be involved in a practice lockdown procedure on April 11, 2024. Similar to fire evacuation drills, classroom teachers will review the steps that students must follow during a lockdown. As always, staff will make sure students are prepared and feel safe during the practice. The practice lockdown is expected to take approximately ten minutes. If you require any additional information, please contact me at the school.

Keeping students and staff safe while at school is paramount to us. Practicing safety drills helps our students and staff to respond appropriately in the event of a real emergency. We will also be having three fire evacuation drills between now and the end of the school year. If you have any questions about this or any of our safety drills, please contact me at the school

Beam Team Food Drive

The Beam Team is collecting donations for Community Care from March 25th-April 3rd. This is organized in conjunction with the celebration of Ramadan to support the idea of performing acts of service during this time. We want to focus on items that families would need for their meal preparations celebrating Eid after the Ramadan fasting period and items needed for the community in general. Please feel free to donate any items to our community drive as their supplies will run low after the Easter holiday. In addition, please consider donations for those celebrating Eid after the Ramadan fasting period.

Planning for the 2024/25 School Year

In order to assist us with making the best decisions possible with respect to class organization and student placements for Jacob Beam Public School for the 2024/2025 school year, we would appreciate it if you would let the office know if your family is planning to move in the next few months. Providing us with this information in the spring will also facilitate transportation arrangements for September. We thank you in advance for keeping us informed! School and classroom organization begins at the end of April so sharing this information with us now is very helpful for our planning for next year!

Upcoming Dance-a-thon

The Jacob Beam Student Leadership Team (Beam Team) is planning a Dance-a-thon to raise money for the purchase of student chromebooks on Friday, April 26th. If this is a Day of Significance for any families who will not be able to attend school on that day, and are interested in participating, please let me know in the next week. If I have not heard from anyone by the end of March break, we will firm up the date and proceed as planned.

Upcoming Author Visit Friday, April 19th

Award-winning author, Philip Roy, will be presenting to our K-6 students on Friday, April 19th. Originally from Nova Scotia, but now residing in Ontario, Mr. Roy writes children's books and Middle Reader novels of adventure and historical fiction.
